The Seasons They Are a Changin’
I. Times and Seasons
a. Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11)
b. Times(chronos) Seasons(kairos) are truly in the Hand of the Lord. He knows the very day and the hour when His plan is going to take place. Jesus reminded the disciples… He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:7-8) In the meanwhile, we are to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be His witnesses in the earth.
c. We know that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night, and at the time when people are groping for peace and safety.
d. This Day will not surprise those of the Light. The Holy Spirit working in the lives of believers readying them for the Parousia (Coming) of the King.
II. Wake UP!
a. We are not in darkness, but we are children of the Light children of the Day. Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: (Colossians 1:12-13)
b. YOU Belong to the Day; or as verse 5:8 literally says, “But let us who being day, be sober…” We need to be awake and sober. Watchful and Prudent. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. (Proverbs 6:9-11) What activity leads you to be spiritually insensitive? It is of the darkness, You were saved to be alive!!
c. Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. (Romans 13:11-14)
III. Put On the Armor of Light
a. There are two vital areas that the Holy Spirit highlights in our need to be ready in the midst of change and transition of time; the heart and the head. He mentions the breastplate and the helmet.
b. Oh! How we need to guard our hearts. We actively do so with Faith and Love.
i. Faith is being fully convinced of something no matter the circumstances surrounding us which are screaming information differently than what we believe. Therefore we continue to live in accordance with our convictions.
ii. Love being the charity of God we have received that makes us Love Him in return and creates in us the benevolent heart of our God who causes us to look out for the needs of others.
c. In a construction or battle zone it is imperative to keep your helmet on. We need our minds guarded so that in the midst of darkness we see the Light of His Day and express that Light to those that remain in the dark. We guard our minds with the Hope of Salvation. Filling our thoughts with the expectation of His Safety and Rescue and taking time to consider its implications and ramifications is the key to meditating on His Word.In so doing, we protect our minds from the penetrating darts of the evil one. That doesn’t mean they want be flung at us or even hit, but they will not penetrate and infiltrate our thinking that could cause us to despair or give in. It causes us to persevere and endure to the end.
IV. Comfort and Edify One Another
a. We need to be encouraged by each other. We are not an island in and of ourselves. Though we know He never leaves us or forsakes us, the writer of Hebrews reminds us that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses that endured; some receiving the promises and others not, yet remained faithful.
b. We too need to take opportunity to speak words of life and truth to our brothers and sisters in the light. Comforting is to come along side and strengthen while Edifying is to help grow or be completed for one’s intended purpose.
