The Word of the Lord
- Truth Is…
The question through the generations is “What is Truth?”
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world–to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”Pilate said to him,“What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. (John 18:36-38)
Not with the article as in the previous verse, the truth. Jesus meant theabsolute truth: Pilate, truth in any particular case. “Pilate’s exclamation is neither the expression of an ardent thirst for truth, nor that of the despair of a soul which has long sought it in vain; it is the profession of a frivolous skepticism, such as is frequently met with in the man of the world, and especially in the statesman” (Godet).
1a) what is true in any matter under consideration
1a2) of a truth, in reality, in fact, certainly
1b) what is true in things appertaining to God and the duties of man, moral and religious truth
1b2) the true notions of God which are open to human reason without his supernatural intervention
Truth is accurate words and correct accounting, but truth is more than just the right facts; it is unchanging, reliable, and applicable reality that is not dependent on circumstance, culture, or creed.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.(John 14:6)
Ultimately Truth is a Person and Jesus says He is Truth.
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15) The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10)
It is important to know the Truth because many times in the NT it is recorded that we should not be deceived. There has been, there is, and there will be deception at work in the earth and in the church. Mat_24:4; Mat_24:5; Mat_24:11; Mat_24:24; Mar_13:5; Mar_13:6; Rom_16:18; 1Co_3:18; Eph_4:14; Eph_5:6; 2Th_2:3; 1Jn_1:8; 1Jn_3:7; Rev_20:3; Rev_20:8.
A)All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
B) And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he (Jesus) interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”(Luke 24:27-32)
C) Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.(Romans 16:25-27)
D) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:1-3)
- The Holy Spirit still leads us to…A) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (John 16:13-14)B) The Holy Spirit speaks not of his own accord but according to the Son. He declares Truth to the Church and to the world.C) Prophetic utterance authored by the Holy Spirit is the Word of the Lord but it will never contradict the Scripture since He is the author of the scripture.D) But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. (1 Corinthians 14:3)E) The prophetic word will build up, exhort, and comfort because it is Truth. It isn’t dependent on circumstance, culture, or creed (what I believe). That is why when the Word of the Lord comes many times we have to repent (change the way we think with a resultant change in the way we live).
- We Must Be People committed to…A) People need to hear the Truth. They may not want to hear the Truth, but Jesus said “you shall know the Truth and the Truth will set you Free”- John 8:32 However, the freedom promised comes as we correctly respond to the Truth. You cannot just give mental ascent to the reality of the existence or accuracy of the Truth, you have to yield to Him.B) With all that is happening in the world today we are to be voices of Truth. The Light that Truth brings can be disturbing to the masses and cause great rage, but there are many that will hear and repent. We have to partner with the Holy Spirit and speakThe Word of the Lord.
